For the love of laughter
“I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It’s probably the most important thing in a person.”
― Audrey Hepburn
Well now… as we groove into a new year I have to add a reminder of levity. Laughter and self introspection are what keep you honest… or at the very least – laughing!
As so many of you know I am a massive Snapchat filter fan. I always credit with the requisite #hashtags as I simply dream of living my life with flawless skin, groovy hair, and assorted ears/butterflies/hearts etc. every single day. There is something that tickles my funny bone about many of their filters.
Whether in the gloomy, light deprived months of winter or feeling burdened with the daily stresses of life, I truly DO think that laughter is the best medicine.
Not only are there mental and emotional benefits to laughter, but many physical benefits according to Asa Don Brown. A great read that even those life sceptics will pause and reflect on the benefits.
Also I must say that the daily boost of positivity in your day through laughter is captured brilliantly here in Dr Robert Provine’s quote in the Psychology Today piece by Hara Estroff Marano:
‘ Most of what makes people laugh is not thigh-slapper stuff but conversational comments. “Laughter is not primarily about humour,” says Dr. Provine, “but about social relationships.” ‘
And THAT’S why simple silly moments with Snapchat make me laugh.
I am brought back to the day of my dear uncle Mark’s Celebration of Life. He was a remarkable man: larger than life with a big personality and a heart that was generous beyond words. The ceremony was tremendously moving, emotional and because he was the king of off-sided jokes and one liners…there was laughter throughout. It was indeed a celebration of how he blessed all of our lives.
Even in the seriousness of the day, at the reception uncle Mark’s 2 young grand children and I got into the Snap Chat filters. Soon we were belly laughing (sorry Dr. Provine!) and though I know there were a number of sideways glances, I am sure uncle Mark was there in spirit enjoying the sound of his grandkid’s laughter. Truly, there is nothing sweeter.
So laugh out loud…
A small giggle…
A full out belly laugh…
Laugh ‘til it hurts…
However and wherever……just laugh.
Because it truly IS the best medicine!
