Just get outside!
Ok.. I know…the days are short….the temperatures are a chillin’ … and it’s legitimately hibernation mode for most of us. All that aside [ yes – eye roll from some of you!! ], it’s vital to your mental, emotional and physical well-being to keep moving and most especially- if you can- get outside!
First of all there is that whole wonderful benefit of fresh air on your skin and that small [ ok maybe it’s just me] niggle of : ‘ BAM….Mother Nature with whatever you throw at me…I am ON IT !!!].
It’s hard though right?
I know this as a runner. The warmer months it’s an easy peasy shorts, tank and go prep. Colder months I look at the current temperature at 6;00 am ([yesssss!], look at the wind chill factor and assess my running gear for the jaunt.
Now I do have to say…be very, very cognizant of that wind chill. Not only can it potentially do skin damage much/more than sun, but those with respiratory issues can definitely be hit with major discomfort.
It’s all about being prepared.
Check not only the temperature before you go out, but look at the wind chill factor and keep this in mind when getting your cold weather clothes on.
On longer expeditions whether cross country skiing, snowshoeing or the like, remember to bring water because keeping hydrated even in cold weather is important.
When the wind is a blowing remember not only your hate and face keeper, but also slather on a barrier cream ( I like Vegaline by Besseline is a vegan natural alternative to petroleum jelly http://www.deliziososkincare.com/vegaline-by-beeseline/ ) to protect your nose and cheekibones from windburn.
But I have to tell you some of my truly most memorable moments were in those sub zero moments.
After a massive snowstorm a snowshoe on the upper flats in its brilliance and blue sky is rather magical. It is rather ethereal to be honest.
Other crazy cold morning runs made me laugh at times. With hat and face guard on, the condensation from my breath gave me crazy “Frozen” ultra natural eyelash extensions.
Ultimately, it’s the daily/weekly regular moments that you need to pump into your life to get through the cold, dark days of winter.
Whether it’s cross country skiing across the park in your neighbourhood, the lake at your cottage or a countryside spot just as a getaway….skating on an outdoor rink….or simply walking the dog, it’s all good and good for you!
Or enjoying time with friends on the snowy slopes skiing and having a ball with friends
Think about what will not only be good for your physical [and mental!] well being, but legitimately schedule this into your day/week.
You do it for meetings, you do it for hockey/soccer/swimming for the kids … now do it FOR YOU!
