Today is a time to reflect on the benefit of furry friends.

I can’t lie, I only embarked ( <- see what I did there?) late in the game of life. Having grown up in a household of (rather) dysfunctional cats I never wanted to embark ( <- again!) on the canine world as it was totally unknown to me, This all changed 14 years ago with our sweet chocolate lab Abbi that I thought was my forever dog.  Within 6 months of Abbi’s passing just weeks shy of her 14th birthday, our home was blessed with a beautiful mini benedoodle.

And so another (crazy) chapter begins…

Let’s chat about a heartwarming journey into the wonderful world of dog ownership. Whether you’re a seasoned pet parent or contemplating the pitter-patter of paws for the first time, get ready to discover the countless benefits that come with having a furry companion by your side.

Let’s talk about the wonderful, soulful, mental benefits you can have with these lovely fur babies…

Companionship That Transcends:

Picture this – a loyal friend who’s always excited to see you, a constant source of joy, and a walking, tail-wagging bundle of unconditional love. That’s the magic of canine companionship. According to Dr. John Archer, a psychologist specializing in human-animal interactions, “The companionship provided by a dog can reduce feelings of loneliness and boost overall well-being.”

Scientifically speaking, interacting with dogs has been linked to increased oxytocin levels – the “love hormone” that promotes bonding and reduces stress. In fact, a study published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine found that dog owners tend to have lower blood pressure and heart rates, contributing to improved cardiovascular health.

Mental Well-being Unleashed:

Having a dog isn’t just about playdates and tail-wagging greetings; it’s a mental health game-changer. Dr. Karen Thodberg, a psychiatrist and researcher, notes that “the presence of a dog has been associated with lower levels of depression and anxiety.” Dogs have an incredible knack for lifting our spirits and providing a sense of purpose.

The routine and responsibility of caring for a dog can also offer structure and routine, which is particularly beneficial for individuals dealing with mental health challenges. Walking, playing, and simply spending time with your furry friend can trigger the release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood lifters.

Responsibilities that Reward:

Now, let’s talk about the responsibilities that come with dog ownership. While it might seem like a daunting task, it’s a journey filled with countless rewards. Dogs teach us about commitment, patience, and the beauty of simple joys. As Dr. Stanley Coren, a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of British Columbia, aptly puts it, “Dogs live in the present moment, and they teach us to do the same.”

Caring for a dog involves daily routines like feeding, grooming, and regular exercise – all of which contribute to a healthier and more active lifestyle. The American Heart Association even suggests that owning a dog is associated with a lower risk of heart disease and increased physical activity.

A Tail-Wagging Finale:

The benefits of having a dog extend far beyond the wagging tail and cute puppy eyes. Dogs become cherished members of our families, offering companionship, boosting mental well-being, and instilling a sense of responsibility. As you navigate the paws and joys of dog ownership, remember that every bark, every tail wag, and every furry cuddle is contributing to a happier, healthier you.
